Being able to set up a hair salon takes a lot of creativity, and that creativity can come in handy when deciding on a hair salon name. However, a creative name will not always be a good name.
The best name for hair salon is coherent, easy to remember, and somewhat descriptive.
Needless to say, the checklist of criteria you must go through when coming up with a hair salon name is much longer than you’d expect. That said, read on as we round up each of the criteria.
1. Include Your Name or Location, but Not Both
It’s common to include your actual name in the hair salon name.
It adds to the uniqueness of the hair salon name, and if you’re a resident in that area, other residents may recognize your name and may even be the reason why they become a customer.
It’s also a good idea to include the location of the salon. For example, you could name your salon the Westmont Hair Salon or be more specific with 2464 Westmont Hair Salon instead.
Upon hearing the name, prospective customers would immediately know where to go.
However, while adding these details is advisable, you shouldn’t include both details at the same time. A name like Westmont Ann’s Hair Salon isn’t pleasant to hear and doesn’t make sense.
Stick to just one detail.
2. The Name Must Be Branding-Friendly
As an agency that offers salon suites for rent, we’ve met with numerous freelancing stylists who came up with names that were seemingly harmless until they tried to establish their brand.
Ann’s Nail And Leisure is an excellent example of a name you should avoid.
You may not find anything wrong with the name at first, but you’ll realize that it’s not a good idea once you try to get its acronym. You don’t want the acronym to accidentally turn into something inappropriate. That’s one way to ensure the name is branding-friendly.
In addition to this, you can also try to come up with a name that you can turn or replicate into a logo. However, this isn’t that important if you don’t plan on making a logo in the first place.
3. Check With the United States Patent and Trademark Office
You don’t want to spend a lot of money on branding your name and putting up a sign only to find out you cannot use the name you came up with.
That’s why before you do anything else, make sure you check with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) if the name is already trademarked.
If so, come up with a new name for hair salon.
4. Search Online for Similar Names
Another place you must check before going ahead with your plans is the internet.
Even if the hair salon names you came up with isn’t already patented or trademarked, it’s still not a good idea to use it if it’s incredibly similar to an existing salon.
For example, if you came up with the name Ann’s Eden Spa and you find that in the same region, there’s an already existing spa named Ann’s Nails and Spa, try to change it at least a little.
If you can’t do that, chances are people will confuse the two.
Imagine one of your regulars, Cathy, recommends your salon to their friend.
When looking for your salon, Cathy’s friend sees a salon with a similar name. They may assume that’s what Cathy was referring to, and you would have lost a potential customer at that point.
5. Keep It Short
A good business name, and this doesn’t apply only to hair salons, is one that’s easy to remember. And as one might imagine, the shorter a name, the easier it is to remember.
As such, it makes sense that one of the many tips for choosing a name is to keep it short.
Another benefit to a hair salon name being shorter is that you can fit it in a logo more easily.
Coming up with a hair salon name may just be one part of the salon business plan, but it affects how well your business does in the long run. As such, you should put a lot more thought into it rather than just spending a few minutes of your time thinking of a random name.
