Eyebrow Tattoo: Is It For You?

Published December 12, 2022
A person’s eyebrows play a major role in one’s appearance. Not only does it accentuate the eyes, but it also helps shape the face. In fact, a 2017 study shows that eyebrows might just be the most important facial feature of a person. Therefore, it makes sense if you want to improve your eyebrow shape.
Unfortunately, your current eyebrow shape would most likely remain the same as you grow old. There may be changes over time since the shape naturally evolves, but the changes are minimal.
That’s precisely why eyebrow tattoos have become quite prevalent recently.
What Are Eyebrow Tattoos?
An eyebrow tattoo is a procedure where a tattoo artist uses a needle containing tattoo ink or pigment to apply the ink by repeatedly penetrating the dermis, the inner layer of the skin.
Think of eyebrow tattoos as regular tattoos that happen to be in the eyebrows.
Are Eyebrow Tattoos Safe?
If we were to rate the safety of eyebrow tattoos from 1 to 10, then it would probably receive a rating of 5. It’s not the safest procedure you can get for your eyebrows, but it’s also not the riskiest.
To be precise, the majority of eyebrow tattoo procedures end with only minor side effects. However, there are cases where the procedure can lead to major issues and perhaps even long-term side effects.
What Are the Side Effects of Eyebrow Tattoos?
Most eyebrow tattoo procedures would only lead to the following minor side effects:
- Redness or swelling
- Pain
- Discomfort
- Development of red lumps or patches
- Itching
These particular side effects would usually pass after a few days, or at most, a week. But there are unlucky cases where more severe issues occur. Examples of these possible issues include:
- Skin infections (if the needle was not sanitized)
- Keloids
- Bloodborne illnesses (e.g., hepatitis, MRSA, etc.)
Keep in mind that these four complications often occur only in a small group of eyebrow tattoo patients. It’s not a normal occurrence, and they’re often avoidable if the needle is sanitized.
That’s why it’s important to go to a certified salon or tattoo artist. However, there are complications that will almost always occur regardless of how reliable or hygienic the service provider is.
Rather than the service provider, these complications have to do with the patient themself.

Who Should Not Get Eyebrow Tattoo?
Anyone can get an eyebrow tattoo, but they have to consider the risks. However, there are certain individuals who, under no circumstances, should get an eyebrow tattoo, and these include those:
- with a skin condition (e.g., dermatitis, eczema, etc.) affecting the treatment area,
- with an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients used to make tattoo dye, and
- who are taking blood thinners (medications that prevent blood clots from forming).
How Long Does Eyebrow Tattoo Last?
Just like any other tattoo, an eyebrow tattoo is permanent. They may start to fade after a couple of years, but eyebrow tattoos, in particular, would usually only fade in your older age.
So, if you got it in your late 20s, chances are it’ll only start fading in your late 50s. That means if you got the eyebrow tattoo in your late 30s, you might not even reach the point where the tattoo fades.
How Much Is an Eyebrow Tattoo?
On average, an eyebrow tattoo typically costs around $600. As always, it would ultimately depend on the location and the service provider. However, $600 is the best point of reference.
