How Demi-Permanent Hair Color Works

More importantly, because it permanently alters your natural pigment, you will get a distinct line of demarcation (roots) as your hair grows. This means you are committed to touching up your roots every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain a seamless look.

Demi-Permanent Color Longevity

Demi-permanent hair color is designed to fade gradually. Typically, it lasts anywhere from 12 to 24 shampoos, depending on the porosity of your hair and the products you use.

One of the biggest benefits of the difference between demi and permanent hair color is how they grow out. Because demi-permanent color fades over time, you don’t get a harsh root line. The color gently washes away, making it a much lower-maintenance option for people who can’t make it to the salon every month.

What Can They Actually Do?

What Permanent Color Can Do

• Lighten Hair: Permanent color is the only one of the two that can lift virgin hair (hair that hasn’t been colored). If you have dark brown hair and want to be a lighter caramel brown without using bleach, you need permanent color.
• 100% Gray Coverage: If you have stubborn, coarse gray hair and you want it completely covered (opaque coverage), permanent color is the gold standard. It penetrates tough gray strands better than anything else.
• Vibrant Changes: For significant changes (going from blonde to dark brown, or red to black), permanent dye provides the richness and durability required.

What Demi-Permanent Color Can Do

• Darken or Change Tone: Demi-permanent can make hair darker or change the tone (e.g., making a blonde more golden or ash), but it cannot lighten hair.
• Blend Grays: If you are just starting to see a few sparkles of gray and don’t want a heavy “helmet” of color, demi is perfect. It blends the grays, making them look like natural highlights rather than covering them completely.
