Nail Tech Must Haves: 10 Tools You Should Never Go Without
Published May 12, 2023
Being a nail tech is both a challenging and rewarding job. It requires not only creativity but also extreme dexterity. One wrong move can leave your client’s hands or feet permanently disfigured.
But aside from skills and talent, there’s one more thing that nail artists should never go without – their tools. Obviously, you can’t do manicures, pedicures, nail art, or gel nails if you don’t have the proper tools.
So if you’re aspiring to be a nail tech but don’t know what tools to buy, we got your back. Here are some of the nail tech must haves you need to jumpstart your career:
1. Working Station
If you’re planning to open up your own nail salon, this is the first thing you should consider.
A nail tech’s working station usually consists of a table and two chairs – for you and your client. The client’s chair typically has a backrest so they can relax or even sleep while you’re working on their nails.
If space is an issue, you can also opt for a portable workstation. It consists of two chairs (one higher than the other) and an armrest or footrest.
2. Nail clippers
Even non-nail techs need nail clippers. This is one of the most basic nail care tools you’ll need.
Nail clippers actually come in different types and materials. Each is made for a specific purpose. But the most basic ones you’ll need are the standard type, flat type, and ring lock.
3. Nail files and buffers
Nail files and buffers are the most overlooked yet most important tools in a nail tech’s arsenal. But without these, your client’s nails will end up with jagged edges.
The main thing you should consider when choosing nail files is choosing the right grit. The higher the number, the smoother the file grit will be. A grit 180 file, for instance, has a much smoother end result than a grit 100 file. Though most nail techs keep nail files and buffers in various grit ratings as clients have different buffering needs.
4. Nail drill
Of course, you’ll need nail drills. Otherwise, how will you remove nail enhancements properly?
Nail drills typically come in a set with different “bits” or tips. These bits come in different sizes, shapes, and materials. Each is also designed for a specific purpose.
5. Nail polish and base coat
These are other obvious must haves for nail techs. After all, you can’t do nail art or nail colors if you don’t have a wide collection of nail polish colors and base coats.
But aside from their wide range of colors, nail polishes also come in different types, such as:
- traditional polish
- hard gel
- builder gel
- dip powder
Each of these types of polish is designed for different manicure designs. The most popular ones are traditional, gel, and acrylic nail polishes.
6. Nail polish remover
A nail polish remover is one of the most basic must haves for nail techs. But not all nail polish removers are ideal for professional nail services.
Some nail polish remover brands have acetone that can dry out your cuticles. While others have harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and toluene. Some clients tend to be very sensitive about this. So make sure to do your research before choosing a nail polish remover.
7. Cuticle nippers
Cuticle nippers or cuticle scissors are a staple in every nail tech’s kit. No proper manicure or pedicure is complete without snipping unwanted skin cells off your client’s cuticles.
8. Cuticle pusher
Like nippers, cuticle pushers are also a staple in every professional nail kit. It’s not only used to push the cuticles back. It can also be used to remove traces of skin from the nail to allow the nail to grow beautifully.
9. Cuticle oil
Some clients, especially those with weak nails, may request cuticle oils to protect and nourish their nails. So it’s ideal to include cuticle oils in your arsenal too. Experts recommend looking for ones that contain jojoba, coconut, and argan oils as they are more nourishing for the nails.
10. Nail art brushes
If you’re planning to offer nail art services, then you definitely need to stack up on nail art brushes. They come in different types and shapes to allow nail artists to make more impressive and detailed nail art.
